Daniel McElroy

Mentor

Daniel is a London-based mentor at Guidewell Global, specialising in ACT and SAT preparation alongside an unusually broad slate of humanities subjects: AP US, European, and World History; AP English Language and Literature; AP Human Geography; AP Spanish Language; and IB History, English, Global Politics, Geography, Theatre, and Film. He has more than a decade of mentoring experience to draw on, including a three-year stretch as a peer mentor and teaching assistant at international high schools in New York City, and over 3,000 hours of one-to-one work with students. Daniel graduated summa cum laude from NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study and holds a Master's degree with distinction from SOAS, University of London.

Daniel's mentorship is grounded in critical thinking and critical pedagogy. He pushes students past the immediate task in front of them, asking them to look for connections across topics, themes and subjects, and to treat every essay or assessment as a chance to build skills they will draw on long after the test. He believes everyone has the capacity to understand the world more deeply, and that the role of the mentor is to help students put what they already know (their lived experience, instincts and curiosities) to work in service of academic and professional outcomes.

Outside work Daniel is most likely to be cooking something ambitious, baking chocolate chip cookies, or knitting a sweater. He travels regularly for the food, but is just as content with a park bench, a picnic and a good book.
