What is the GMAT exam? Current format, sections and scores
The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is a computer-adaptive admissions exam owned by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) and used by graduate business and management programmes in the UK, the US and worldwide.

Schools decide how the score fits their process: London Business School's MBA, for example, requires a valid GMAT or GRE score and states no preference between the two. Check the current requirements for your specific programme and intake.
The GMAT at a glance
Length: 2 hours 15 minutes, plus one optional 10-minute break. There is no essay.
Sections: 64 questions across three 45-minute sections, Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights, all computer-adaptive.
Quantitative Reasoning: problem solving with arithmetic and elementary algebra, without a calculator.
Verbal Reasoning: reading comprehension and critical reasoning.
Data Insights: Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation and Two-Part Analysis, with an on-screen calculator.
Scores: total score from 205 to 805, with each section contributing equally. Scores are valid for five years.
Where and when: at test centres or online, year-round.

What each section tests and how to approach it
Working through GMAT example questions is the quickest way to understand what makes the exam distinctive.
- Quantitative Reasoning is the closest thing the exam has to a numerical reasoning test: arithmetic and algebra framed as problem solving rather than calculation.
- Verbal Reasoning asks you to read arguments closely and identify what strengthens, weakens or is assumed by them.
- Data Insights is the section to look at first if the format is new to you: five question types mixing numbers, prose and graphics, including Data Sufficiency, where the task is to decide whether you have enough information to answer at all.

You can sit the GMAT at a test centre or online, year-round. The official GMAT registration page shows live appointment availability by centre, date and time. For the online exam, review GMAC's system, workspace and identification requirements before you book.

Before choosing a route, confirm with each programme whether it accepts test-centre scores, online scores or either; GMAC's exam policies leave that check with you. GRE or GMAT: which admissions test do you need?
Many graduate management programmes accept either the GMAT or the GRE, but policies vary, so start with the admissions pages for every programme on your list. Where both are accepted, choose on format and on how else you might use the score. The GMAT is designed specifically for management education and gives equal weight to Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights. The GRE is accepted across a wider range of postgraduate programmes, which matters if a non-business master's is also in view.
