Anne Hsia

Academic Mentor

Anne is an Academic Mentor with more than ten years of experience and thousands of teaching hours behind her, supporting hundreds of students in SAT and ACT preparation, GRE and GMAT preparation, all levels of mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering and economics, alongside executive-function skills. She approaches mentorship as something that has to start with seeing each student as a whole person, and works with them on becoming the best version of themselves.

Anne knows what it takes to juggle multiple competing demands: she triple-majored at Santa Clara University in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Piano Performance, graduating summa cum laude in four years. That experience built her conviction that the organisation and time-management skills she had to develop are themselves teachable, and helping students take ownership of their work has become central to how she mentors. In sessions she leans on everyday analogies to make complex concepts concrete, walks students through problems step by step, and then flips the roles so the student is the one explaining the logic back to her. She asks pointed questions throughout, gives her students a structured problem-solving framework, and leaves space inside that framework for creative thinking. She closes each session by reflecting on it with the student: what worked, what did not, and where they are headed next.

Away from teaching, Anne is most likely to be found in the kitchen testing a new dessert recipe, planning her next international trip, playing pickup ultimate frisbee, on the beach, or with friends and family.
